Porta Nuova is today one of the most important urban development projects in Europe, designed to revitalize an abandoned area near the city center and to connect three different neighborhoods (Garibaldi, Varesine and Isola) with a large central public park. Porta Nuova is a mixed-use regeneration project with new office buildings, luxury residences, commercial and cultural spaces, for a global built area of about 350,000 sqm and 170,000 sqm of public and pedestrian area.

The Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) in Milan is a model for a sustainable residential building, in contrast with the technological approach of most of the contemporary buildings. The project built at Porta Nuova consists of two residential towers 112 and 80 m high, hosting 900 trees and over 20,000 plants. The buildings are clad with black panels, creating a neutral background stands to highlight the colors of the vegetation. White frosted glass panels on the balconies further articulate the façade. The Bosco Verticale was awarded as the Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2015 from The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat of Chicago.

The project by Herzog and de Meuron redesigns a part of the city strongly characterized in the past by the presence of the Spanish walls and Porta Volta. The project is an intervention at an urban scale, with the body between viale Pasubio and via Crispi about 200 meters long. The volumes are defined by the repetition of a series of inclined portals in reinforced concrete, which take the shape of stereotyped buildings with a pitched roof, with the glass that closes the distance between the structural elements.

CityLife is the large redevelopment project of the former Trade Fair of Milan, located in one of the most prestigious residential areas of the city. It is a unique mixed-use redevelopment, covering an area of 366,000 sqm and including residences (530 apartments designed by Hadid and Libeskind), offices (three towers of 130,000 sqm), a shopping district with shops and restaurants, a large public park of 170,000 sqm.
The connection with the highways and the metro lines, the park, the high quality of the buildings, will transform this area in one of the most attractive district of Milan.

The former industrial area of Alfa Romeo has been transformed into a new neighborhood, according a master plan designed by Studio Valle. Works began in 2002 and three years later opened the shopping precinct and the first residential buildings.
Conceived as an Italian style district, it is characterized by its public spaces open to the neighborhood. The park represents the new north-west gate of the city and connects the area with the modern district of QT8, created by Piero Bottoni after World War II.

Tortona-Savona district is the result of the transformation of a large industrial area, with the reuse of the productive buildings for the world of creativity and design. This process has created a unique atmosphere where artisans work close to worldwide labels as Armani, Zegna, Tod’s. New cultural hotspots opened in the area in the last few years, such as the Museum of Cultures designed by David Chipperfield, Base (space for creative and cultural workshops, business incubators, coworking spaces, events) and the Armani Silos, a space that hosts a selection of Giorgio Armani’s creations.

The new Milan venue of Fondazione Prada, for the promotion of contemporary art and culture, develops on an overall surface of 19,000 sqm of a former industrial complex built around 1910 as a distillery of the Società Italiana Spiriti. The project, conceived by Oma, combines seven existing buildings with three new structures (Podium, Cinema and Torre). Reusing the former buildings Rem Koolhaas designs a place characterized by the presence of conflicting spaces and volumes. The spatial organization of spaces old and new, horizontal and vertical, wide and narrow, open and closed, thus offers appropriate places to host different artistic expressions.

The building designed by the Irish studio Grafton Architects, winner of an international competition, is the extension of the Bocconi University, one of the most important educational and cultural institutions in Milan. Realized between 2004 and 2007, it is part of the campus that also includes the historical buildings by Giuseppe Pagano, Giovanni Muzio and Ignazio Gardella. The project is based on a “megastructure” suspended over a new collective space. The building, used for offices, classrooms and an auditorium, is covered in concrete and ceppo, a typical Milanese style natural stone.
