Modern and contemporary architecture in Milan

Milan, the main city of northern Italy and one of the most populous metropolitan areas in Europe, is the most important laboratory of modern and contemporary architecture of Italy.

Since the early decades of the twentieth century Milan has acquired an increasingly important role for the Italian and the international architecture thanks to the presence of architects like Portaluppi, Gio Ponti, Pagano, BBPR and Giuseppe Terragni. After the Second World War the architectural experimentation leads to the identification of a specific own style Milano through the works of Caccia Dominioni, Gardella, Zanuso, Magistretti and Aldo Rossi.

In the last 10 years, in preparation for the event of EXPO 2015, Milan has experienced a great transformation that is leading to be one of the world’s capital for fashion, design and culture. Today the city is experiencing a period of extraordinary change, thanks to major projects of Porta Nuova and CityLife but also to specific interventions as Bocconi University, the Fair, the Museum of Cultures and the Fondazione Prada. Next to a new generation of Italian architects, as Stefano Boeri, author of the Vertical Forest, Cino Zucchi, Citterio and Viel, Park Associati and Piuarch, the most important designers of the world worked in the city of Milan, as Cesar Pelli, KPF, Zaha Hadid Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, Arata Isozaki, David Chipperfield and Grafton Architects.
